
Tata Electronics, a Tata Sons subsidiary, is in early-stage discussions with Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML to explore producing components and subassemblies for advanced chipmaking machinery in India.
The talks build on the Memorandum of Understanding the two companies signed on 16 May 2026, which centred on deploying ASML's advanced lithography systems at the Dholera semiconductor fabrication plant. Where that agreement was about bringing the machines to Gujarat, this one is about building parts of them here.
ASML is the sole manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, the tools required to produce the world's most advanced microchips. Those systems are extraordinarily complex, and the current discussions are not about the machines as a whole — they are about localising specific subassemblies.
Industry expectations suggest early-stage localisation would target precision mechanical components, frames, cabling, connectors and printed circuit boards rather than core technology.
The initiative sits inside the Indian government's broader Semiconductor Mission, which aims to reduce import dependence and build a domestic chip-production ecosystem. Encouraging local manufacture of machine components is also a way to raise the precision-engineering standards of Indian suppliers.
For ASML, which operates as a global system integrator, India represents a chance to diversify its supply chain. The company already relies on a network of specialised partners for critical parts — high-end optics from Carl Zeiss, vacuum systems from VDL.
The most critical subsystems of an ASML machine — EUV optics and light sources — depend on intellectual property and manufacturing capability that remain concentrated in a handful of specialised global clusters. Any near-term Indian contribution is likely to sit in smaller, less complex modules.
Success will also depend on whether the local supplier base can meet ASML's quality and precision standards. Delays in reaching those standards, or difficulty scaling production, would feed back into the timeline of the Dholera semiconductor project itself.
The next milestone to watch is the formalisation of any manufacturing agreement, and the identification of which specific subassemblies are slated for production in India.
