The government has formally notified India's first semiconductor fabrication plant as a Special Economic Zone at Dholera. The SEZ, spread over 66.166 hectares, is set up by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited for electronic hardware and software.

SEZ status brings the fiscal and customs framework that capital-intensive manufacturing leans on — duty treatment on imported equipment and inputs, and a defined export-oriented regime — applied here to the Tata fab footprint.

With a proposed ₹91,000 crore investment and around 21,000 jobs, it is a procedural milestone rather than a ribbon-cutting — but it is the kind that quietly de-risks a build of this scale.
